Bellies Roll into Solid Playoff Position
BELLIES ON A PLAYOFF BOUND ROLL
TAKE 5 OF 6 LAST GAMES
Your NW Jr. Bellies are on a roll taking 5 of their last 6 games, including 2 in a row and a big away win over the surprising Nanaimo Timbermen on the island. Will Malcom has continued his hot hand of late climaxing in a 10 point effort against the Burnaby Lakers. Tre Leclair had a solid 7 point night and goaltender Keegan Melnychuck had his most impressive effort to date with a solid 43 save performance. The Bellies travelled to Vancouver Island and scored a hard fought 10 – 8 victory sealed by Malcom’s 2 markers in the last 1:19 of the third period. But the statement game in this latest run may have been Tuesday night at QPA where the Bellies scored a last second – literally! – goal against the PoCo Saints. Getting a possession with 22 seconds left on the clock, the Bellies coaching staff called for the timeout. With goaltender Brayden Bell on the bench, the offense killed the clock until 6 seconds remained. Captain Erik Maas slipped by 2 Saints defenders and, leaving his feet, scored a spectacular in-the-air goal with 1` second left to seal the win. Although it was not their best effort of late, the players and the coaching staff dug down and pulled out a textbook game save. This was the Bellies’ 3rdstraight win and vaulted them into a 3rdplace tie with the Timbermen and the Thunder. However, the Jr. Bellies hold games in hand on both those teams. Next Bellies game is this Sunday June 16that 5:00 pm when the 2ndplace Victoria Shamrocks come to town.
